OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - The Lubbock Christian University men's golf team kicked off the fall portion of its schedule earlier this week by competing in the U.C. Ferguson Orthopedic Associates Classic, hosted by Oklahoma City University and played at the Lincoln Park Golf Course. The Chaps made a strong showing in their inaugural event of the season with three sub-300 rounds and an 11th place finish. Individually, Trevor Turnbow was the story for Lubbock Christian, going 72-68-72 in three rounds for a one-under par total of 212 and a 13th place finish. His performance is the first multi-round under-par finish for a Lubbock Christian golfer since Trent Phillips took over the program two years ago. The other LCU golfers who made the trek to Oklahoma City included Michael Milliken, who finish tied for 42nd (75-74-76), Ryan Barcena, who likewise finished tied for 42nd (79-72-74), Jake Mahan, who finished 46th (73-76-44), and Nick Williams, who finished tied for 64th (77-78-80). Over the past year, coach Phillips has been insistent upon adding depth and talent to his roster, and with the group of golfers he has assembled, the fruits of his labor are readily apparent. Competition for the right to compete in this week's tournament has been fierce for the Chaps, who have been qualifying over the past two weeks. The five golfers who traveled to Oklahoma City were separated by an average of less than two strokes per round, shooting between 72.2 and 74.0 in qualifying. In addition, there were five other golfers (Wes Wilson, Will Kinnaird, Seth Harris, Windsor Wilkerson, and Collin Cunningham) who were likewise less than two strokes away, averaging between 74.6 and 75.6 in qualifying. The Chaps will now step aside for a couple of weeks as the Lady Chaps have their turn on the links, but the LCU men will be back in action on October 11th, when they travel to Odessa to play in the OC Classic, hosted by Odessa College.
