The Lubbock Christian University Lady Chap volleyball team will open Sooner Athletic Conference play tonight when they welcome the Oklahoma City University Stars to the Rip Griffin Center at 7:00 pm. Tonight's match-up is much anticipated as it pits two of the top three teams in NAIA Region VI against one another in a battle featuring the teams with the two best overall records in the SAC. LCU currently sits at 10-4 on the season and has been playing well of late, winning nine of its last 10 with their only loss coming at #21 West Texas A&M University, a noted NCAA Division II powerhouse. Oklahoma City likewise comes in playing well with an overall record of 18-2, the most wins of any team in the nation, and the Stars are currently on a five-match winning streak. With the addition of a new volleyball team in the SAC this year, conference play does not start at the same time for all schools, so OCU has already played one match in the SAC, defeating Mid-America Christian. They are tied atop the SAC standings with Southern Nazarene and John Brown, who are also both 1-0. Tonight's match-up also features the top two teams statistically in the SAC as either a Star of Lady Chap leads in every major category, according to the NAIA and Dak Stats. For Oklahoma City, much of their strength is at the net as Maryna Verbovetska leads the conference in kills per game with 3.9, and Whitney Kress is tops in blocks with 1.0 per game. While Lubbock Christian is likewise solid at the net, their statistical strengths lie elsewhere as Rachel Stuyvesant leads the SAC in assists at 12.1 per game, Courtney Yonke leads in digs per game at 6.9, and Suzanne Childress leads in aces per game at 0.7. Between the two teams, eight returning all-conference performers will be on the floor tonight as the Stars suit up Verbovetska, Kress, Amy Clendenin, Erin Hirt, and Lindsay Hansen, and the Lady Chaps feature Katie McGuire, Kelsey Odell, and Brittany Hix. Again, game time is set for 7:00 pm tonight, and the Lady Chaps will continue Sooner Athletic Conference play tomorrow, when Southern Nazarene University comes to the "Rip" at 2:00 pm.
