Lady Chaps Post Impressive Wins

LCU sweeps OCU, SNU in Sooner Conference action

A tough two-match homestand took place last weekenfd for head coach Jennifer Lawrence and the Lubbock Christian University volleyball squad. The Lady Chaps came through in fine fashion, though, as they swept Sooner Athletic Conference rivals Oklahoma City University and Southern Nazarene University. Here's a look at how each match played out.

LADY CHAPS OVER OCU 30-22, 30-17, 25-30, 30-21

The Lubbock Christian University Lady Chap volleyball team got the Sooner Athletic Conference portion of their schedule off to a good start by defeating Oklahoma City University 3-1 last Friday night at the Rip Griffin Center.

In game one, the two teams played even the first 20 points before LCU (11-4) jumped out to a five-point lead 15-10 and was then able to stretch that to eight at 25-17 before going on to the 30-22 win.

In game two, the Lady Chaps were likewise able to pull ahead midway through the game, and OCU (18-3) did not make a late run as LCU scored 12 of the final 16 points to win 30-17.

In game three, however, the Stars showed why they came in with only two losses, jumping ahead 5-1 and then fending off several Lady Chap runs to win 30-25.

In the final game, it was LCU's turn to play from in front, jumping out 4-1 and then maintaining about a five-point lead most of the way before closing out the match with a 7-3 run to win 30-21.

For the match, Suzanne Childress recorded 13 kills and 18 digs, while Rachel Stuyvesant had 43 assists and 13 digs. The Lady Chaps also got 11 kills from Katie McGuire, 21 digs from Courtney Yonke, 13 digs from Kelsey Odell, and an impressive eight block assists from Elissa Loynes.

For the Stars, Maryna Verbovetska tallied a game-high 17 kills, while her teammate Amy Clendenin had 14, and Erin Hirt led OCU in assists with 40 and in digs with 22.

LADY CHAPS DEFEAT SNU 30-16, 29-31, 30-19, 30-23

The Lady Chaps won its second Sooner Athletic Conference match in as many days by defeating the Southern Nazarene University Crimson Storm 3-1 Saturday afternoon at the Rip Griffin Center.

Early in the match, LCU (12-4) looked to be on cruise control, still riding high after the OCU win on Friday night, and quickly jumped out to a 14-6 advantage in game one before going on to win 30-16.

Game two, however, told a different story as Southern Naz. (3-11) matched the Lady Chaps punch-for-punch throughout with no team leading by more than three and SNU squeaking out the 31-29 win.

In game three, Lubbock Christian righted the ship and played from in front the entire way enroute to a 30-19 win, but in the match's final game, the Lady Chaps had to scratch and claw their way back into contention, trailing by as many as five on three separate occasions.

That said, trailing 16-17, LCU's Rachel Stuyvesant served up six straight points to create a 22-17 lead, and Lubbock Christian never looked back, going on to win 30-23.

McGuire tallied a season high 21 kills in the victory, leading all hitters, though Odell finished with 15, Loynes had 13, and Childress had 10.

The 69 kills for Lubbock Christian marks a season high, and can be credited in large part to the outstanding play of Stuyvesant, who finished with a career high 65 assists.

Defensively, Yonke scooped up 28 digs, Childress had 23, Stuyvesant had 16, Odell had 13, and Loynes finished with seven block assists, providing LCU with a solid presence at the net.

For Southern Nazarene, Morgan Loewen had 14 kills, Heather Overturf had 37 assists, and Erika Knowles had 21 digs.

The Lady Chaps will now take a few days off as they get set for a tough road trip next week to Oklahoma and Arkansas. In three days, LCU will play three Sooner Athletic Conference matches, visiting Mid-America Christian Thursday at 5:00 pm, John Brown at 7:00 on Friday, and St. Gregory's at 2:00 pm on Saturday.

Lubbock Christian will next play at home on October 2nd, when heated rival Wayland Baptist comes into the Rip at 7:00 pm.
