The DusterToday is currently accepting entries for the 2007 Fall Semester "Writing for Dollars" contest. The contest is open to any current Lubbock Christian University student (either full or part-time) as well as any current faculty or staff person wishing to submit an entry. Cash prizes for the best in each category (listed below) will be awarded and a select number of stories will also appear in an upcoming issue of The DusterToday.

The contest rules are quite simple:

(1) Story entry deadline is set for Friday, October 12th by noon … your story must be submitted via e-mail only to Kelly Robinson, Coordinator of Student Publications to: kelly.robinson@lcu.edu and must include the following information:
• your name as you wish it to appear on the byline (author's name)
• your hometown (students only … faculty/staff need to include your department)
• your major (again, students only … faculty/staff include your job title)
• your classification (students only … faculty/staff let us know number of years you've worked for LCU)
• designate the category you are entering
• Finally - a statement at the end of your story that says: "I understand that this story has been submitted to The DusterToday for consideration in the 2007 Fall Semester 'Writing for Dollars' contest and I hereby agree to allow The DusterToday to publish this story at their discretion."

(2) Your story must be between 500 and 1,500 words in length … the font you use and the size font you use is not a factor in your entry.

(3) You may choose to do a story in the following categories (you must designate the category you are entering and you may enter no more than one story in any category) … multiple entries by individuals are encouraged with the knowledge that you may enter one story per category only:

• NEWS WRITING: Coverage of a Lubbock Christian University-related event, situation or issue qualifies as hard news. To be judged on objectivity, thoroughness, local interest and style.

• FEATURE WRITING: An article on a person, place, object or situation that is Lubbock Christian University-related and/or of special interest to students (includes sports features). While the standards of good news writing still apply, feature writing also is judged on originality and human interest.

• OPINION WRITING: A column or editorial on an issue of special interest to the university or to students (includes sports columns, but does NOT include arts and entertainment/critical writing). To be judged on quality of writing, depth of thought, courage, public service and persuasive ability.

• SPORTS WRITING: A sports news story based on Lubbock Christian University-related sports activities. Sports columns must be entered in the Opinion Writing category. Sports features must be entered in the Feature Writing category. Judged on quality of writing, originality, local appeal and lack of sports clichés.

• ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT/CRITICAL WRITING: An article that recognizes opinion writing in such areas as art, theater, movie, book and restaurant reviews. Judging will be based on technical knowledge, writing quality and appeal to Lubbock Christian University students.

• ENTERPRISE / INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING: An investigative article or in-depth report that uncovers a newsworthy happening on campus. The judges will consider enterprise, initiative and resourcefulness of the writer or team of writers.

The DusterToday will not necessarily publish contest winners, but all entries will be considered for publication. Judges for the contest will be chosen by the Public Relations and Marketing Department of Lubbock Christian University and will consist of at least three judges per category. The names of entrants do not appear on copies of the stories that will be judged.

Again, the contest deadline is Friday, October 12th by noon ... entries received after that time will not be considered.
