PLAINVIEW, TX - The Lubbock Christian University men's basketball team opened the season this past weekend by splitting a pair of games at the Wayland Baptist University Classic, played at the Hutcherson Center on the campus of WBU.

Though they came up short in Friday night's opener against Missouri Baptist, the Chaps (1-1) played well, shooting 52.6 percent from the floor for the game, and they enjoyed a six-point lead at halftime, 40-34. In the second half, however, Missouri Baptist (2-0) got hot, hitting 8-of-11 three-pointers. The game went back and forth most of the way down the stretch, and was tied at 71 with 1:10 left to play. The Spartans then hit a pair of three-pointers to stretch the lead to six and, eventually, went on a 12-7 run to close things out.

In his first game with Lubbock Christian University, sophomore Tommy Lane made an impressive debut, pouring in a game-high 29 points on 13-of-15 shooting. Lane was joined in double figures by junior Jacob Klockenga, who had 17, and senior Munir Shakir, who added 12.

For MBU, Bret Wilson finished with 26 points, Jason Fry had 22, Brandon Bishop had 19, and Jake Hackerson had 12.

On Saturday, the Chaps rebounded nicely by leading Dallas Christian College (0-2) the entire way en route to a 79-56 victory. Though Lubbock Christian trailed only once in the first half, it was never able to pull away from Dallas Christian and led by only four (37-33) at the half.

In the second period, the trend continued as the Chaps and Crusaders played pretty much even until the 13:38 mark when Lubbock Christian took control. Up 48-47, LCU went on a 20-6 run to open up a 14-point lead and never looked back.

Lane was, again, the high point man for Lubbock Christian, with 15, though Klockenga had 13, and both Shakir and Nick Hatcher each had 10.

For DCC, Brandon Dewalt finished with a game high 18, while Chevis High had 13, Jon Ramer had 12, and Steven Mawire had 10.

Up next for the Chaps is an unusual early season break as they will not play again until November 16th, when they travel to Abilene to compete in the ACU classic, hosted by Abilene Christian University. On the 16th, Lubbock Christian will take on Houston Baptist University at 5:00 pm, before turning around to play Hillsdale Free Will Baptist Bible College at 3:00 pm on the 17th.
