Volleyball Squad Wraps Up Strong Season

For both head coach Jennifer Lawrence, a stellar group of Lady Chaps, and, indeed, all of the Lady Chap faithful, the 2007 campaign was one to remember.
For the first time in her four years as head coach of the Lady Chaps, coach Jennifer Lawrence amassed 30 wins, finishing 30-8. Also for the first time, she went undefeated in Sooner Athletic Conference play, finishing a perfect 12-0 and capturing her third SAC regular season title in four years.
In addition, her Lady Chaps likewise ran the table at the SAC post-season tournament, capturing that championship before advancing to the NAIA Region VI tourney, where they entered the field as the #2 seed. For her efforts, Lawrence was named the Sooner Athletic Conference "Coach of the Year," her second such accolade (2005).
Though the Lady Chaps did not advance as far as they would have liked, falling to Texas Wesleyan University in the semi-finals, there was still much hardware to be handed out as coach Lawrence benefited from several outstanding individual performances that did not go unnoticed.
Setter Rachel Stuyvesant was named a first-team All-SAC selection and both the Sooner Athletic Conference "Player and Setter of the Year." The sophomore from Albuquerque, NM finished the season with 1,653 assists, the fourth best single season in school history, and she was also named to the NAIA Region VI first-team as well as the NAIA Region VI "Setter of the Year."
Joining her on the NAIA Region VI first-team was libero Courtney Yonke. The sophomore from Lubbock Coronado set the LCU single season record for digs with 947, eclipsing the old mark of 838 set by Hayley Geer in 2005. Yonke was likewise an all-SAC first-team honoree as well as the NAIA Region VI and Sooner Athletic Conference "Libero of the Year," and the week of October 24th, Yonke became the first Lady Chap to be named the NAIA National "Libero of the Week."
The only other Lubbock Christian player to be honored on the NAIA Region VI level was Suzanne Childress, who landed on the second-team. A junior from Katy, Childress led the Lady Chaps with 437 kills, the 8th best single season performance, and she was tied for the team lead in aces (46) and second in digs (479). In the SAC, she was a first-team selection as well as the "Newcomer of the Year."
