The Lubbock Christian University men's and women's basketball programs had their first ever meeting with Rogers State University last Saturday afternoon in Sooner Athletic Conference play and the teams split their set. The Lady Chaps of LCU earned a 63-45 win, while the Hillcats men's program defeated the Chaparrals 84-60.
The women's contest had a slow start due to poor shooting and the teams combined for just 11-of-54 shooting in the first half. LCU had only hit one field goal of their first eight shots and trailed as much as eight, but a late rally in the closing moments of the half placed them with a 16-14 deficit. The Lady Chaps turned the ball over 12 times during the half, but Rogers State shot just 17.9 percent (5-of-28) in the half to equalize the poor productivity. The second half was not much different for the Hillcats, who shot 40.7 percent (11-of-27) in the second half, but it was a different story for LCU. Jordan Hampton hit a three point shot to open the second half, and the bucket gave the Lady Chaps their first lead (17-14). It was a sign of good things to come for Hampton, who ignited for a game high 19 points, all in the second half. She also nailed four of the team's ten three-point shots in the second half. The Lady Chaps started out hitting 10-of-11 three-point field goal attempts in the half and finished the half hitting 10-of-12. Sierra Wilcox-Lovorn produced three three-pointers in the half as well to help the Lady Chaps out-score the Hillcats 49-29 in the half. The 63-45 win for the Lady Chaps improves their record to 11-2 and 4-1 in conference play, extending their win streak to six games.
The men's game, going in, was a match-up of solid defense against a turnover-free LCU squad, and it turned out with the defense winning the battle at the Claremore Expo Center. RSU entered the game in the top five in rebounds in the NAIA and eighth in steals, while LCU entered the game 19th in the NAIA in turnover margin, averaging just 14.6 turnovers a game. The Hillcats forced 31 turnovers and out-rebounded the Chaps 42-27 to aid the domination for the first-year Rogers State program, which faced Oklahoma State last night. Sylvester Spicer, an Oral Roberts transfer, had a game high 24 points in the victory, hitting 10-of-15 shots from the field. The UTSA transfer tandem of Roderick Rodgers and Eric Young each had a nine-rebound performance to co-lead the game in the category. LCU was led by Young's high school teammate, Tommy Lane, as Lane posted 22 points. The point total matched his performance from last Thursday night at John Brown. Bernardo Rocha led LCU in rebounds with six, despite not playing in the second half after re-aggravating an injury that occurred at John Brown. LCU shot just 34 percent in the game (17-of-50) and could only cut the 42-32 halftime deficit to a nine-point deficit in the second half after shooting just 30.4 percent in the half. Rogers State was able to pull away late in the game and their largest lead was a 24-point lead, which they had when the final horn sounded. The Chaps drop to 7-5 on the season and 1-4 in conference play with the loss, also ending their three-game winning streak.
LCU's basketball program will finally see conference action at home after five games on the road, as they host Oklahoma Christian University Thursday night at the Rip Griffin Center. The women's tip is scheduled at 6:00 pm, with the men to follow with an estimated 8:00 pm start.
