People travel from far and wide to attend one of the most highly anticipated weekends of the year at Lubbock Christian University. Alumni, family and friends all gather in the McDonald-Moody Auditorium to hear the band, Hosts/Hostesses and social clubs perform for the annual Master Follies production.
To put it simply, Master Follies this past weekend was entertaining, a definite highlight to Homecoming Weekend. First of all, the stage set captured your attention when you first walked into the Moody Auditorium and you felt like you were at the movies. A marquee outlined in lights announced the name of the shows and movie trailer posters for each club covered the walls to imitate a movie theatre.
The Hosts and Hostesses opened the show with a song from the recently popular musical, Hairspray, "You Can't Stop the Beat," energizing the audience with the upbeat song. They put on quite a show the whole night, and each Host and Hostess exemplified the incredible talent they have. Other songs the Hosts/Hostesses performed were the Frank Sinatra song, "Come Fly with Me," "Somebody to Love" (performed by with the LCU Praise Choir), and "Change the World," to name a few.
Each club performed with excitement and the variety of the themes, songs, dance moves, and costumes made the night interesting. The title of the club's shows were: Alpha Chi-"We Do All Our Own Stunts" (Stuntmen), Zeta Gamma- "Zeroes to Heroes" (putting together a Follies show), Kyodai- "This…Is…Kyodai" (Spartans) , Kappa Phi Kappa- "Ladder 58" (Firewomen), Christliche Damen- "Ugly Side of Beauty" (Miss America Pageant), Sub-T-"Sub-T Inc." (The Office), LOA- "Lead Role" (Broadway), and Koinonia- "Happily Ever After?" (Not So Prince Charming).
The band sounded awesome and the choreography for the shows was unique and impressive. One of the most exciting parts of the production was when the Hosts/Hostesses and different club members performed Michael Jackson's timeless "Thriller" as the last major performance of the evening. The club member's faces were painted to resemble zombies and the choreography was an amazing re-make of the song.
At last, all the clubs gathered on stage. The enthusiasm heard and seen on stage from the club members permeated to the audience as all the winners were announced. These were the winners of Master Follies 2008:
Women's Division:
1st place: Kappa Phi Kappa
2nd place: Christliche Damen
Men's Division:
1st place: Koinonia
2nd place: Kyodai
Special Category Awards
People's Choice Award: Koinonia
Spirit of Follies: Zeta Gamma
Special Effects: Koinonia
The directors of the winning shows expressed their feelings of the evening. Kecia Nichols, one of the directors for the Kappa show, said, "I will never forget the feeling after our last performance knowing that we performed the best we could. There was so much screaming, hugging and tears. It was a long journey but it was so rewarding to see it all come together. The girls were amazing, putting countless hours into practicing to make an entertaining, fun and energetic show. This will definitely be a memory I will cherish forever."
Bethany Hooper, another director of Kappa, shared her feelings of the experience saying, "Follies is probably the most fun thing you can be a part of at LCU and being a director this year made it even more fun because you actually see the show that came from your mind being performed in front of everyone you know. Winning is awesome, but just being in the CDC with your favorite people for hours on end is probably the best part of it all."
Drew Weesner was one of the directors for Koinonia, and expressed, "When we started performing on Wednesday night, at dress rehearsal, we came up with a description for what we wanted our attitude to be, 'Confident, not cocky.' The best part about winning was receiving congratulations from members and alumni from all clubs, because our guys worked hard to remain humble throughout the whole weekend. It was also pretty cool to be the first Follies show in the history of KOINONIA to win People's Choice!"
Josh Cox, another director for Koinonia said that it was "one of the most meaningful experiences of my life."
Congratulations to all the winners and to each person who had a role in putting the Master Follies production together and making it a night to remember!

This was my first Master Follies to attend. I had so much fun. I am going to LCU in the fall of 2008 and am so excited. I brought a friend with me and she said she'd come visit next year if for nothing other than to see Master Follies again. (Continued…)
