The #7 Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals completed the four-game sweep of the #8 Cumberland University Bulldogs with a 7-4 win in seven innings and a 15-5 win in a run-rule shortened five inning contest Saturday afternoon at Hays Field. The Chaps claimed the first two games of the series on Friday afternoon, winning 12-11 and 5-4.

In the opening game, CU got on the board first with Jason Bush's single to left center scoring Nick Jiles for a 1-0 lead. The Chaps took the lead in the bottom of the second inning after a bunt by Chase Robertson resulted in pitcher Eric Spivey committing an error allowing Ryan Burke and Jarred Bogany to score for a 2-1 lead. Karlton Banks batted in a run on a ground out to the shortstop to make it a 3-1 contest. The Bulldogs tied the game in the third inning with a Brian Lucas home run bringing in Ryan Kelley for the score. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Marc Gomez hit a single to right field to score Burke for a 4-3 Chaps advantage. LCU's Buck Britton singled up the middle to bring in a run to increase the lead to two. Cumberland cut the lead to one in the top of the fifth as Bush singled to right field to bring in Lucas for a score. The Chaps scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to take the 7-4 lead and it would be all they needed, as they held Cumberland scoreless in the final two innings.

James Wallace recorded the win on the mound for LCU pitching all seven innings. He allowed four runs off of seven hits, and he struck out 10 batters. CU's Spivey took the loss having struck out four batters, with two earned runs, and seven hits in six innings of work.

In the second game, it was the Chaps who earned the first run as Tyler Johnson doubled to left-center for an RBI in the bottom of the first inning. CU acquired the lead when Bush homered for a pair of runs in the top of the second. LCU tied the game as Banks hit a single to centerfield and a Cumberland error ensued, allowing Burke to reach home plate. The Chaps regained the lead in the bottom of the third inning as they exploded for six runs for a 8-2 advantage. In the inning, Johnson doubled down the left field line to bring in a pair of runs. Robertson homered to centerfield to bring in three runs, and Vince Bejar hit a home run over the right field fence for a score. Cumberland's Jiles grounded out to the shortstop to bring in a run to make it an 8-3 game in the top of the fourth. James Parker then hit a two-run homer at the top of the fifth to make it 8-5, but CU would not get another at-bat to draw any closer.

Seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning allowed the Chaps to end the weekend series by the run rule with a 15-5 final. The inning featured Banks' triple down the right field line to bring in a run, and pinch runner Mario Estrada scored in place of Banks on a balk. An Armando Dominguez double and Johnson single each brought in a run. Burke's reach to second base on an error allowed LCU to score twice, and Bejar's single to the left side brought Burke to home plate for the win.

Tanner Vickers pitched all five innings in the win. He struck out seven, had four earned runs, and allowed seven hits. The Bulldogs Anthony Fomasi pitched three innings in the loss, gave up eight earned runs and nine hits, while striking out two.

Johnson went four-for-four from the plate in the game and produced four runs-batted-in. Chase Robertson also produced three runs-batted-in in the game.

The #7-ranked Chaparrals are 14-1 for the season and head out on the road for conference games at Oklahoma Baptist Friday and Saturday. Cumberland University is 8-4 on the year with all four losses coming this weekend to LCU.
