Hobbs, NM - The #7 Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals blanked the College of the Southwest Mustangs in a pair of games Tuesday afternoon at Williams Field to extend their winning streak to 12 games. The Chaps shutout the Mustangs 7-0 in game one and 9-0 in game two.
In the opening game of the two-game set, LCU received dominant pitching from Tanner Vickers. The sophomore from Lubbock Coronado High School held the Mustangs to just three hits in five innings pitched and he did not allow a run. He struck out five and was relieved by Billy Jordan, who surrendered just one hit in two innings pitched to combine on the shutout. Once Vickers took the mound in the bottom of the first, he already had a 3-0 advantage. LCU's Rob Learned belted his second home run of the season with a two-run shot in the first inning for a 2-0 lead. The Chaps added to it in the inning with an RBI single by Chase Robertson.
One of three Mustang errors led to a run in the fourth inning and the Chaps made the score 6-0 in the inning with a two-out double by Buck Britton that produced a pair of runs-batted-in. Britton added his third RBI of the game in the sixth with a double that plated Jaime Armendariz, who was aboard after a lead-off triple.
In game two, it was again the Chaps pitchers that stole the spotlight. Starting pitcher Shane Karnbach and relievers Richard Navarette and Jakob Cunningham helped the Chaps limit the Mustangs to just two hits without a run scored. The Mustangs went 4.1 innings without a hit to start the game. The Chaps picked up three runs off four hits for a 3-0 lead in the second inning. They had another three-run inning in the sixth inning marked by a two-RBI triple by Marc Gomez to give the Chaps a 7-0 lead. In the seventh inning, Robertson hit an RBI triple and the Chaps closed the game with a 9-0 lead.
Robertson ended up three-for-five in the two games with three runs-batted-in. Armando Dominguez also had a solid series at the plate, going four-for-seven with two runs-batted-in.
LCU improves to 19-1 with the wins and they now return home to host St. Gregory's University for a three-game series beginning Friday at Hays Field.
