Barbara Slate is from Toronto, Canada, and grew up in a close-knit family with two brothers and four sisters. She moved to Lubbock in 1983 and married her husband, whom she had met through mutual friends while she was a student at the University of Toronto. Though all of her family remains in Canada, she is thankful that, "We're still really close and we still talk."
Mrs. Slate and her late husband have two children together, a son and daughter. She stayed at home taking care of her children until they were in elementary school and then went back to work and school. She received her bachelor's degree from Lubbock Christian University and a degree in Library Science from North Texas. Her career as a librarian began as a work study employee at LCU's library, then a full time position as a periodicals clerk, and, eventually a full-time librarian in the fall semester of 2002.
Her hobbies include reading and gardening and taking care of her dogs. Family is extremely important to her as she likes to talk and keep in touch with them.
Mrs. Slate wanted to be a librarian at LCU because of the "wonderful group" of people, mentioning the other librarians, who are talented at what they do. She also said, "I really feel blessed to have the opportunity to work with students and offer help when people come in asking questions. I am learning something all the time from them and I hope I am contributing to their success."
She likes reading a variety of different books, from mystery to library-related materials such as how to teach and motivate students. Mrs. Slate added "We, in the library, are always telling the students that if they need assistance, all of us are here to help and are more than happy to help them."
Being a librarian brings joy in her life: "It is really fun; I really enjoy it," she says. Mrs. Barbara Slate lives by these words through the smile on her face and her willingness to help students find a book or, in my case, help with overwhelming research papers.
